War is the Same by LordHayabusa357 War is the Same by LordHayabusa357
UNSC Army soldiers attacking a Covenant outpost to recapture high point areas in a war torn city. UNSC Army in my concept body armor, more to the style of modern kevlar body armor.

I LOVE your figures and characters. They are excellently drawn and the expressions/emotions are spectacular. All of them--it blows me away. that's what I was drawn to immediately when I saw this piece.
your color palette is great. The warm colors are working really well with the explosions and the smoke and the darkness of the characters. Your composition works really well, too. No tangents or distraction
My critique is with the bottom half of the piece. I'm trying to figure out what's going on. It's too busy/confusing. I think you need to bring the closest guy forward a bit, and distinguish him from the guy on the left and the three guys on the right. I'm losing the edges of his elbow, his leg, and I can't really determine what's going on on the lower left side of the main guy. Are those machines? are they clothes? There's so much detail there that I can't really tell what's going on. (The same thing is happening in the bottom right corner of the piece, too.) I would suggest a simplification of shapes/details and maybe use some atmospheric perspective to distinguish the closer soldiers from the further ones. You could even use smoke to separate the soldiers and make them more clear. Our eyes are drawn to detail, and right now you've got too much detail in places that aren't important. The focus is on the soldiers' faces, the guns, and the explosions in the back, right? I know that's what I'm drawn to!! Because you nailed those things!! I'd just suggest cutting out some of the unnecessary details so that the viewer knows where to look/what to focus on.
hopefully this is helpful and it doesn't seem like i'm just bashing--i'm not, your piece is absolutely fantastic! I hope I can be capable of art this beautiful someday. Fantastic job!! :)

41 out of 43 deviants thought this was fair.

While you do have a very apparent eye for creating a good and interesting composition (i.e. the poses of your characters, the particle effects you add and the general placement of all the elements within.), it seems you lack a higher level of creativity that you clearly seem to think you have. Having browsed through much of your gallery I have come to this conclusion. You are good, but not as good as you think you are. Having said this, allow me to begin my critique of your "art."

The Good
1. Your placement of characters and the particle effects is well done, though the composition does become a little cramped near the right side.
2.The character poses and expressions are pretty interesting.
3. You state the sources and give credit to the original creators.

The Bad
To be clear, you are one of the better people who do this kind of "art," but you still fall short on so many levels its outright irritating to see someone with so much potential wasting it on such meaningless and absolutely un-creative "art."

Your "original" armor/outfit is not actually original. You even say that yourself in a way by stating the original sources that you just sliced in half and put together. While this may be a variation, it does not warrant the title "original" especially since you did not design either of the original pieces. Original the character do not steal?

Continuing on the theme of your lack of creativity and originality, the fact that you did not design the background is another punch to the face of someone out there, more creative than you, because nobody really stops to comprehend what work like yours actually signifies; lack of actual creativity. Just because you can pose models that other people made, using a program generally used for modding, does not mean you are creative or original. And considering that pretty much all of your gallery is made up of pieces like this shows how little you are willing to come out of your little box where you think you are king.

Things to Improve Upon

I saw you mentioning that you do your own work but you have yet to post a single piece that is anything but this mockery of art. This lack of your own personal creative work brings a few thoughts to my mind as to why someone that has some level of skill not post his own possibly creative ideas. The first of which being you are ill-equipped to do so, but after you read this I better see some god damn legitimately original artwork from your hands if that is the reason. (Borrow someone's scanner, export some files, you are smart you figure it out.) In short do your own work, don't try to live a fantasy through other people's blood and sweat.

This will probably hurt your swollen ego and it should because you really are not that good. I feel like i have to say this multiple times to get it across to you. There is so much more you could do with what is given to you in that program, even just legitimately modeling on augmentations would be a better expression of creativity than what you have been doing.

I hope that the artist that is somewhere inside you realizes that you need to move on. You have drawn people in and made a relative following with your mockery of art, so when you actually post your actual art people will be there to look at, and see your creativity which is more than can be said for people that are a ten times the artist that you are now or may ever be.

Hi! Your superb illustration took me into the fateful surreal wages of war. I'm looking at the conviction of intent, on the soldiers faces, and sense a well heeled discipline of Team Spirit amongst them. When you lurch into battle, with your Wing Man looking left, you can actually concentrate on stopping everything on your right. This conviction is mostly because you have made the decision to trust your lives in each other. Sure, War is Hell, but you match and repel the heat by being a large force moving as one.

Thanks for making Art to stimulate the senses!

At first I thought it was a drawing, and probabily many people thought that too!
I still think that this is a great picture, and the fact it confuses many people makes it a great picture. I don't see these drastical lacks of originality in your gallery, so keep up your good works!

Wow, now this is actually really cool, if only such a scene was painted in the actual games without the marines always dying. On a positive note not related to dying at all, this is a fantastic piece!

The amount of detail in this render is something truly amazing. Every character actually looks like he/she belongs in the scene. It's better than some renders where everyone else other than the main character is posed half-heartedly. Keep up the good work!
